Challenge:

In 2013, we carried out the shutdown of Sweden's only flat glass production entity. The challenge was the loss of jobs and the impact on suppliers and the surrounding community. A number of legal disputes followed, the highest valued one being approximately 100 MSEK. The facility was disassembled and production lines were relocated. At most, over 300 sub-contractors worked on the disassembly. Production lines were relocated to other countries. Key functions were maintained during the closure. Land and buildings over 85,000 square meters were disposed of after cleanup and expired environmental permits.

Lessons learned:

A small team of dedicated personnel can act as "stay-behind" and carry out large closing projects. Leading change is about trust. By being genuine and authentic, you get to know your group and create relationships that make implementation possible.

Delegate, it's not possible to do everything or keep track of everything. Trust your team and let them take responsibility. Make sure they have the authority to make decisions and stand behind them even when they make mistakes.
